4 of 6 numbered limited edition box books. Each houses a concertina book, which tells a short, autobiographical tale about things and experiences acidic: "Life has been imbued with many things tangy, tart, acid and sour. I embraced acidity. An early sour note was struck..." and finishing on a sweet note! The boxes used for this book were purchased from a charity shop. I was inspired by their acid colours to conceive this book. Transforming castoff materials is something I like to do in the making of my book art. Though I take great care to create a high quality finish, the boxes may have imperfections. Colour inkjet printed on 180 gsm end paper, cardstock, acid-free pva paste; loveheart sweet embedded in a base inside; in a gift wrap-covered box. Turquoise, yellow, orange and pink. Size 5 x 20 x 3 cm. © Leslie Wilson-Rutterford London, 2007

A luggage tag book originally created for University of Northampton's experimental book show 2008. I have began a series, each slightly different, with a unique vintage button closure. An extra piece constructed for the RE: experimental book exhibition curated by www.weloveyourbooks.com at University of Northampton. A collaborative project, artists were asked to make a luggage tag. I continued with the theme of RE: (as in my Received, With thanks (a modern-day Receipt book), creating a stream of consciousness sequence of 'road' phrases, expressions and song titles. A progression develops, creating a new prose, which culminates in words quoted from Dante: 'Il cammin di nostra vita.* (The road of our life.) © Leslie Wilson-Rutterford London, 2008

I re-created and digitally altered an old 1970's children's book, to portray a life lived with art. I made the original for an altered book project for Newport School of Art, Wales. It has exhibited in various venues. I made the first, and a subsequent 5 copies by hand, which are first edition. The book has 39 pages all together, is hardbound and laminated. As an artist, raised by artists, with art all around me, our family life is untidy, but colourful and concentrated. At face value, I AM AN ART GALLERY: A Re-creation is a poignant and, sometimes, humorous expose of my domestic life; seen through the various artworks, objects and junk therein. On another level, the original childrens' books from the 1970's became a backdrop in subject matter and time, for a personal history. The book was totally recreated: designed, printed, bound and covered to resemble the original. The new images were posterized to echo the original style. While the tone of the wording was retained, and some of the original text; much of it was cut and pasted to form a new story. The quirky revisions both enhance and obscure the original content and show glimpses of a life lived through art and objects. Written for children, the original book gave human qualities to a building. Turned around, human existence is a living memorial to shared culture. Like the gallery, we too inherit, contain and display the culture we absorb. I AM AN ART GALLERY ultimately pokes fun at, but also celebrates the art and objects we cherish, regardless of their value. Our lives are intrinsically linked to our possessions and they, in turn, bring life to our past. We are all houses of our own histories. © Leslie Wilson-Rutterford London, 2007
